Before I came to Centre, when I thought of sororities, I thought of big, state school, expensive organizations. I always thought that joining a sorority wasn't financially possible for me. However, when I got to Centre, I realized that Greek life on our campus is much more affordable! In addition to the significantly cheaper cost of being a member of Centre's Greek community, I have the option to enroll in a monthly payment plan for my dues, which allows me to pay as I receive my paychecks. While the financial commitment is still considerable and the decision to take on this commitment should not be made lightly, Centre's Greek life is much more affordable and easy to balance than Greek life at large, state schools tends to be. Before going through recruitment, I sat down with my parents to discuss my choice to go through this process. One of our topics of discussion was who was going to pay for all this. I am the only one in our family to join Greek Life, so my parents told me that I should be financially responsible. First year me kind of freaked out a little bit, and thought to myself -- how am I going to afford all this? I started saving money from both my summer job and my campus job to pay for my sorority’s dues. This was not easy at all...I had to make choices of not going out to eat some nights with friends or not ordering something online that I really wanted because I had the responsibility of paying for something I wanted to be a part of. But throughout this entire season, being a member of a sorority had taught me to financially budget for my future. I have honestly learned that soon enough one day I will be paying for everything on my own. This has been a good start and experience for me to learn how to save but still be a part of a community and a sisterhood. Emily Doyle, Class of 2022 Rho Gamma Louisville, KY |
